About the Episode

In this episode of the Hope + Help Podcast, host Christine Chappell interviews Alasdair Groves about his book, Talk About What Matters Most: A Christian Man’s Guide to Forging Friendships. During the conversation, Alasdair explains why meaningful friendships between men can be difficult to develop and what makes Christian friendship distinct. He discusses how the gospel frees men from shame to be honestly known, how friends can celebrate the good, lament the hard, and confess the bad together, and how men can take practical steps toward deeper fellowship. He also offers encouragement for becoming the kind of person who can form meaningful friendships rooted in Christ.

About the Guest

Alasdair Groves (MDiv, Westminster Theological Seminary) has served as a biblical counselor for twenty years. He has founded a counseling center (Restoring Hope New England), served as faculty and eventually as executive director at the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation (CCEF), cowritten the book Untangling Emotions, and spoken for churches and organizations around the world. Alasdair and his wife, Lauren, live with their three children in New Hampshire, where they attend Christ Redeemer Church in Hanover. He enjoys getting outside to run and play ultimate Frisbee, sitting back with a good novel, and finishing the day by making good food and good music.

About the Book

Are you silently carrying a burden of sin, fear, grief, or struggle? You’re not alone. Many men are experts at keeping everything inside—even when silence leaves them vulnerable to loneliness, moral failure, and spiritual stagnation.

Biblical counselor Alasdair Groves shows how honest, gospel-centered conversation can break that silence. By sharing the real issues that weigh on their hearts, men create strong, supportive friendships that encourage spiritual growth and protect against moral pitfalls. Learn how to make more meaningful conversations, frame discussions around Scripture to strengthen faith—not just feelings—and build a routine of honest check-ins to keep you and your friends accountable and connected.
